Can NBA teams score their way to a championship? No, this isn’t possible, not without the proper defensive play. There is no amount of high powered offense that you will defeat NBA contenders in a playoff series.

What NBA expert spit out this nonsensical lunacy?

The NBA, the powers that be about 5 years into the 2000’s, they decided that it would be better if there was more scoring in NBA games.

So, the people that run the league, they decided to change the rules of the game.

  • Add a rule here
  • Subtract a rule there
  • Tweak this, tweak that
  • Make the game less physical
  • Add some more adjustments

The things they did, they served the purpose intended, Scoring began to skyrocket.

The Disconnect

Of course, too many NBA fans, younger fans, this was mainly due to human beings evolving into X-men since they became aware.

This only began after they were born, 5,000+ years of normal humans – made way for today’s humans

And I have to believe that humans aren’t the same anymore, based on the thoughts of so many young people, humans are changing

It’s like if the movie “idiocracy” was a documentary. I’m going to assume that in the womb these people were inundated by toxic levels of CO2 gas & then the internet gave them a platform. Those not seeking knowledge, not seeking truth but they desired confirmation on what they wanted to perceive as the truth.

Somtimes out of bias, sometimes out of laziness.

So the rules..

Defensive 3 Seconds

What is the 3- second rule in the NBA
  • Defensive 3 second (add a rule here)….defensive 3 second violations. This prevents the defense, mainly the rim protector from standing under the basket, looking to defend his rim like an NHL goalie.

Getting to the cup, it’s never been so easy & without resistance…BUT… WAIT, THERE’S MORE,

If this wasn’t enough on its own, just in case a defender wants to get too defensive, the game has also been made much softer, sometimes flagrant fouls get called for thinking about committing a hard foul.

Zone Defense

If these real life changes seem tongue-in-cheek to make it understood that this is a joke, the NBA, a few years before, they added zone defenses. It took about a week before it was understood that NBA players will just shoot over a zone.

Now zone defense is only used as a switch up to try and confuse or trick the offense, who’s not prepared for it. To catch them off guard. I believe on all plays – zones are run about 1-2% of the time in the NBA.

The part thats funny – the joke – if you run most zones with defensive 3 seconds, you’re going to get called for it. 2-3 zone, where’s the center…It’s a joke.

Hand Checking

Kobe Bryant defends Michael Jordan.
  • Hand checking…(subtract a rule there)

IT’S MUCH EASIER TO SCORE WHEN SOMEONE ELSE ISN’T PUTTING HANDS ON YOU AFTER YOU GET THE BALL

AS A GENERAL RULE OF LIFE….EVERYTHING IS EASIER WHEN SOMEONE ISN’T PUTTING HANDS ON YOU.

Gary Payton guards Michael Jordan.

The subtraction of hand checking is the biggest reason the game has changed as it has.

With hand checking, the defender is all up on the player with the ball, he’s inside his jersey, no space & the defender is trying to push him to where he wants the ball handler to go.

Gary Payton tries to steal the basketball from Michael Jordan

Similar to a good NFL defense forcing a scrambling QB left because he’s not as effective rolling to his left.

Without this rule today, it creates space & the “freedom of movement” rule, this makes sure you can’t play tough defense at times.

It stops the defender from closing in on this space but it all starts by banning hand checking.

Steph Curry or Dame Lillard pulling up from almost half court, this can’t happen with hand checking, Steph or Harden circa 2015, the dancing with the ball thing

Kevin Johnson defends JohnStockton on the perimeter.

This can’t happen with hand checking either.

The 3 point shot becoming so much more prevalent in the game, also is due heavily to the hand checking rule being outlawed & freedom of movement too.

Many superstars don’t take a lot of three’s, the influx in 3-point attempts is mainly due to the rule changes allowing role players, players that can’t get their own shot to now be able to stand at the 3 point line & fire away.

Not being able to close that space is the main reason for this. It also seems to be the reason there are so many one dimensional players in the NBA today.

1980’s

The 1980's was the most talented decade of NBA basketball.

The 1980’s has the best collection of talent – bar none, if you disagree, it’s because you lack the knowledge needed to have a valid opinion.

Take it from someone that is a world class talent evaluator & has gone & watched every decade of NBA basketball that’s on tape. Almost every team in every season via full game tape.

It’s not close, the 80’s were a different animal in overall talent. Every era has its legendary, generational talents with unique game.

That includes the 80’s, before & after – until today. Is it true, some of the absolute greatest played in the 80’s, yes but the difference was the depth in talent though.

Anyway all I really know is PLAYERS FROM TODAY WOULD AVERAGE LESS PPG PLAYING BACK IN THE 80’S OR 90’S & PLAYERS FROM THEN WOULD AVERAGE MORE PPG IN TODAY’S NBA.

This has nothing to do with one generation being better & one being worse, it’s simply due to the NBA changing its rules for the soul purpose of increased scoring.

“Gather” Rule

The NBA also created the “gather” rule in 2009, this addition to the rulebook, it made moves like the eurostep legal, today’s version of the step back jumper would’ve been traveling without the gather rule

The NBA's gather rule came into effect during the 2009 season.

James Harden

There are many moves that would be called traveling today without this new rule. In many instances it allows the ball handler to take extra steps that weren’t possible before.

This was James Harden’s claim to fame.

HERE’S THE ANSWER TO THE ACTUAL QUESTION –

JUST LIKE WHEN THE GAME WAS MORE DEFENSIVE- YOU CAN’T WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY WITHOUT GETTING STOPS IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Defense might be a different animal today, more like a kitty Kat at times, but the same rules to winning champiosnhips apply.

Even though it’s lesser defense, you can’t win a ring without defense,

Look at the top scoring teams in last year’s playoffs

Top Scoring Teams in 2023 Playoffs

  • Bucks – 118.8 ppg – lost 1st rd
  • Hawks – 115.8 ppg – lost 1st rd
  • Clippers* – 115.6 ppg – lost 1st rd
  • Suns* – 114.2 PPG – lost 2nd rd
  • Kings – 113.7 ppg – lost 1st rd

*Either the Suns or LAC had to make 2nd rd of playoffs

Top Scoring Teams in 2022 Playoffs

  • Grizzlies*- 112.5 ppg – lost 2nd rd
  • Warriors – 111.9 ppg – won championship
  • Nuggets – 110.0 ppg – lost 1st rd
  • Pelicans – 109.8 ppg – lost 1st rd

  • Blazers – 119.5 ppg – lost 1st rd
  • Jazz* – 116.9 ppg – lost 2nd rd

  • Mavs* – 117.0 ppg – lost 1st rd.
  • Clippers* – 114 ppg – lost 2nd rd.
  • Jazz – 113.4 ppg – lost 1st rd.
  • Lakers – 112.8 – Won championship
  • Bucks – 111.1 ppg – lost 2nd rd.

Mavs or Clippers had to make 2nd rd.

As you can see, this isn’t an anomaly, it’s the norm.

THE TOP TWO ASPECTS OF WINNING RINGS ARE DEFENSE & BALL PROTECTION, WITHOUT THEM, HOW MANY POINTS YOU SCORE IS IRRELEVANT.

This is what’s still good, it doesn’t matter what the rules are, as long as it’s NBA basketball, you can’t simply outscore contenders in playoff series’ en route to a championship.

It’s so simple, no team is so good offensively that a good defensive team won’t get stops and if you can’t get stops, you lost the series before it even started.
