I’ve made a list of the best Stanley Cup Replicas available for sale on the market today. I’ve graded each type and I hope this helps in anyone reading make an informed decision on which Stanley Cup Replica to purchase.
The Stanley Cup is then championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League’s (NHL) playoff champion.
It’s the oldest trophy awarded to any league’s champions in North America. Making its first appearance in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.
The Stanley cup is named after Lord Preston of Stanley, the Governor General of Canada. Lord Preston donated it to be awarded to Canada’s top amateur ice hockey team.
Lord Stanley of Preston, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1891 to 1896, purchased the trophy in 1895. In 1899, he donated the cup to the Canadian Amateur Athletic Union, where it remained until 1927.
At that point, Lord Stanley gave the Cup to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Club, the original owners.
In 1928, the NHL took over the Cup and the rest is hockey history. The tradition continues today.
Professional hockey teams could first compete for Lord Stanley’s cup in 1906.
The National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), the two top hockey leagues at the time, reached an agreement that each league’s champion would face each other for the trophy.
Similar to the first Super Bowl’s pitting the NFL vs. the AFL champions. The Stanley Cup became the de facto (a state of affairs that is true in fact, but that is not officially sanctioned) trophy for the NHL champion in 1926.
In 1947, it became the de jure (a state of affairs that is in accordance with law, i.e. that is officially sanctioned) championship trophy of the NHL.
The original Stanley cup bowl was made of silver. The current version is topped with a version of the original bowl and made of silver and nickel alloy.
Unlike other championship trophies, a new Cup isn’t made each year for the NHL’s championship teams.
The teams used to keep the trophy until a new champion was crowned. The team then displays a Stanley Cup replica in any player personal or organizational trophy cases.
Today the Cup winners only keep the NHL championship trophy throughout the summer and a limited number of days during the following season. With the cup returned to reside at the league offices.
There are actually three Stanley Cup trophies. The first one is kept in the Vault Room at Hockey Hall of Fame. It’s called the “Dominion Hockey Challenge” trophy.
The second one is the actual Stanley Cup, which is kept in the Hockey Hall-of-Fame in Toronto. And the third one is the replica Stanley Cup, which is usually displayed by teams that win the Stanley Cup.
When NHL president Clarence Campbell decided that the Dominion Cup was becoming too fragile to pass around, he came up with the Presentation Cup.
The third cup, also called the replica cup, is an exact copy of the presentation cup. It was made in 1993 by Louise St. Jacques. When the presentational cup is unavailable, it stands in for it. So if you’re visiting the hall-of-fame during the summer, you’ll probably see the replica cup.
The current Stanley Cup has a height of 89.54 centimeters (35.25 inches) and weighs 34.5 pounds.
The current version of the NHL trophy was made in 1958. The modern one-piece Cup was designed with a five-band barrel which could contain 13 winning teams per band.
Since 1924, a select portion of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff names are engraved on the cup’s bands.
Every 13 years when the bottom band of the Stanley Cup is filled with names of champions, the top band is removed and retired to be displayed in the vault of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
The four bands below it are slid up one place and a new blank band is added to the bottom. The first winning team engraved on the newest band, in theory, is displayed on the trophy for the next 65 years.
There are more than two thousand names inscribed on the Stanley Cup. Among them, Henri Richard has the most with eleven, Scotty Bowman is at the top among coaches with nine, Jean Beliveau is first among all people with seventeen – ten as a player and seven from his role as an executive, all with Montreal.
1937-38: Chicago Blackhawks – Pete Palangio’s name appears twice; it’s spelled correctly once and incorrectly as PALAGIO.
1941-42: Toronto Maple Leafs – Goaltender Turk Broda is represented twice, once as TURK BRODA and again as WALTER BRODA (his real name).
1946-47: Toronto Maple Leafs – Forward Gaye Stewart is misspelled as GAVE STEWART.
1951-52: Detroit Red Wings – Coach Tommy Ivan’s name is misspelled as TOMMY NIVAN; center Alex Delvecchio’s name is misspelled as ALEX BELVECCHIO.
1956 thru 1960: Montreal Canadiens – Hall of Fame goaltender Jacques Plante won the Stanley Cup five consecutive years, his name is spelled differently each time.
1962-63: Toronto Maple Leafs – The team name is misspelled as TORONTO MAPLE LEAES.
1971-72: Boston Bruins – The team name is misspelled as BQSTQN BRUINS.
1974-75: Montreal Canadiens – Forward Bob Gainey’s name is misspelled as GAINY.
1980-81: New York Islanders – In the second of their four consecutive championships, the team’s name is misspelled as NEW YORK ILANDERS.
1983-84: Edmonton Oilers – Owner Peter Pocklington included the name of his father, Basil Pocklington, who was unaffiliated with the team. After the NHL learned of the move, it ordered the name removed. The name is now covered by a string of 16 X’s.
1995-96: Colorado Avalanche – Forward Adam Deadmarsh’s name was misspelled as ADAM DEADMARCH. It was later corrected, a Stanley Cup first.
2001-02: Detroit Red Wings – Goaltender Manny Legace’s name was misspelled as MANNY LAGASE; as with Deadmarsh, it was later corrected.
Henri Richard has his name of the Stanley Cup as a player a record eleven times. Scotty Bowman has won the most cups as a coach, a record nine championships.
With 24 victories, the Canadiens have taken home the Stanley Cup more than any other team. Montreal also holds the record for most consecutive cup wins with five in a row (1956-60).
Fans of the Canadiens were so possessive of the Stanley Cup that during the 1962 playoffs when the cup was displayed at Chicago Stadium for the reigning champions, Blackhawks fans Ken Kilander tried to steal the cup. He walked right out the door with the trophy.
When an officer stopped and interrogated him, Kilander replied, “I want the Stanley Cup to go back where it belongs – to Montreal”.
After winning the Stanley Cup in 1991, Mario Lemieux hosted his teammates at his house for a party. While Lemieux was out of town, Phil Bourque decided he would test whether the Stanley cups could float. He tossed it into the swimming pool, it sank straight to the bottom.
Two years later, Lord Stanley was at the bottom of Patrick Roy’s pool.
Dominik Hasek decided to take a swim with Lord Stanley in 2002 and the keeper of the cup was at wits’ end and demanded that the Detroit Red Wings goalie get out, dry off the cup and return it, cutting short his personal day with the trophy.
After winning the Stanley Cup in 1905, the members (now called the “Silver Seven”) of the Ottawa Hockey Club had a bit too much fun partying.
After the team banquet, some not-so-sober players brought the trophy outside and allegedly decided to test their accuracy by trying to kick the then-small Cup into Ottawa‘s Rideau Canal.
When the members of Montreal’s 1924 Stanley Cup winning hockey team got a flat tire on their way to the teams victory party at the home of the clubs president, they removed the trophy from the boot of the car to reach the spare wheel.
When the time came for each player to drink champagne from the silver bowl, the cup was nowhere to be found.
The players had left it on the side of the road.
They hopped in their car and sped back to the place where they had changed the flat and found the cup in a snow bank, right where they had left it.
The Edmonton Oilers were one of the greatest teams ever assembled during the 1980s. Between 1983 and 1989, they won four stanley cup championships and were captained by two legendary players, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
After their 1987 victory, legend has it that Messier took the cup to an Edmonton nightclub known as the Forum Inn and placed it on the main dance floor. A dancer at the club allegedly used the cup as part of her risque act
When he won the cup again in 1994 with the New York Rangers, Messier and his teammates brought the trophy to another strip club Scores in Manhattan.
Messier also put dents into the Cup (twice) during his rendezvous with Lord Stanley and these exotic women.
He brought the National Hockey League championship trophy to an auto body shop to be fixed both times.
After winning the Stanley Cup in 1994, the New York Rangers broke a record 54-year drought by not having been champions since the 1939-40 NHL season.
Fans believe that the Curse was brought on by the Rangers disrespecting the Stanley Cup.
During the 1939-40 season NHL season, the mortgage on the Rangers home rink at the time, the third incarnation of Madison Square Garden was finally paid off.
To commemorate its success, the management of the hockey team symbolically burnt the mortgage papers in the bowl of the trophy. Then, winger Lynn Patrick and his teammates reportedly urinated in the trophy’s bowl to commemorate their Stanley Cup win.
People believed that the New York Rangers franchise had been cursed for disrespecting the Cup by urinating into the bowl.

I would seriously consider buying this if the Philadelphia Flyers had won a recent Stanley Cup.
What makes this a unique collectible is that this is the actual ice that these teams played on in the Stanley Cup Finals.
