Alec Bohm can flourish in future at first for Phillies. He was projected to be a threat to all fields.

Joe Girardi can’t continue to play him at third base or only use him as a pinch hitter. “Bohmer’s” potential is high value with an even higher batting average.

Power will come as he fills out more.

Despite an awful 2021 season, Alec is still a career .282 hitter for the Phillies. He has been ahead of schedule in everything so far.

The only thing holding him back is Phillies Manager Joe Girardi. He must accept Hoskins and Bohm just can’t start together.

One player was Rookie-of-the Year runner up with a .338 average and the highest batting average with runners in scoring position(.452) in all of baseball during the Covid shortened 2020 season.

The other is a career .241 hitter. This isn’t choosing between Ryan Howard and Jim Thome. It could be like we don’t need Ryne Sandberg because we have Manny Trillo though.

Wichita State

A product of Omaha, Nebraska, “The Bohmer” hit .533 & .526 in his Junior and Senior seasons respectively at Roncalli Catholic High School. He was rated the number one prospect in Nebraska and choose to play ball for the Wichita State Shockers.

Alec hit a homerun in his first collegiate at-bat.

Alec Bohm Stats

As a Freshman in 2016, Alec Bohm’s stats read that he hit .303/.346/.489 with 20 runs, 54 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 30 RBI.

He started 44 games, 23 at third base and 21 as the designated hitter. Bohm was named a First Team Freshman All-American and Second Team All-Valley as a Designated Hitter.

Alec played in 58 games with 58 starts as a Sophomore, 46 at third base and 12 at first base. Hitting .305/.385/.519 with 44 runs, 71 hits, 13 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 40 RBI and five stolen bases.

Alec Bohm’s stats as a Sophomore earned him First Team All-Valley honors at third base. He had an 18 game hit streak from April 5-May 5.

As a Junior in 2018, he played in 57 games with 57 starts, all at third base. Bohm hit .339/.436/.625 with 57 runs, 76 hits, 14 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 55 RBI, 39 walks and nine stolen bases. “The Bohmer” was named a Second Team All-American by Baseball America.

Alec Bohm stats and his ability to hit to all fields made him the best hitting prospect in the country heading towards the MLB Draft.

Scouting report
Coming into 2018, scouts were divided as to which of Wichita State’s two potential first-round position players was better. Greyson Jenista has more all-around ability and won the Cape Cod League Most Valuable Player Award last summer, but Bohm posted better numbers there and does a better job of tapping into his considerable power potential. Bohm easily settled the argument with a superior junior season, thrusting himself into consideration as a top-five selection in this year’s Draft.
Bohm manages the strike zone well and makes consistent hard contact from the right side of the plate. He doesn’t strike out as much as Jenista, he has an edge in bat speed and his stroke is more geared to generate power at this point. Bohm understands that he doesn’t have to sell out to hit home runs, so he doesn’t, letting his power come naturally.
Bohm doesn’t offer much when he’s outside of the batter’s box, however. Though he has worked diligently to improve at third base, he lacks quickness and range, and his hands and arm grade out as average. He’ll probably wind up at first base, but has the offensive upside to provide value there.
MLB comp:Nicholas Castellanos
Fun fact: Bohm is a Yankees fan, and his Wichita State teammate Jenista — ranked No. 43 on MLB Pipeline’s Draft Prospects list — is a fan of the rival Red Sox.
He said it: “The wood bat is not really a disadvantage to me. I’ve always made the transition from metal to wood pretty easily. It’s been real simple. I’m seeing the ball and slowing the game down.” — Bohm to the Wichita Eagle during Cape Cod League play in 2017
They said it: “I’ve said all along he’s going to be one of the premier hitters in college baseball. There’s not many hitters you coach that have the vision to see the ball out of the pitcher’s hand like he does. He sees the ball early and he’s a big, powerful, physical player.” — Wichita State baseball coach Todd Butler to the Wichita Eagle

More Evaluation

Looking at Alec Bohm stats from Wichita State had mostly all scouts and experts calling him the best pure hitter in the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft.

Physical, XL frame; prototype corner slugger body type; similar to Troy Glaus.

MLB ETAPresent RoleFuture RoleRole DescriptionRisk
2020 60 All-StarHigh

Hit45 55 Some length to path, but has strength+batspeed to cover inside hole. Staying on pitches low/away better than previous looks, has opened up the other part of the field and it shows. Excellent contact ability and bat-to-ball skill for a power hitter; sqaures up numerous speeds to all parts of the zone.
Game Power45 60 Has the hit tool and approach to get to power in games. 25+ HR upside.
Raw Power60 70 Easy plus raw; ball jumps off the bat w/ loft and strength to all parts of the park; absolutely destroys middle/in spot for towering pullside drives. Puts on a BP show.
Run45 40 Runs better underway than up the line, moves well for size when he gets going. Speed won’t be huge part of his game, but runs bases w/ noticeable instincts. Reads defenses, knows the situation, frequently takes extra bases. Body type to lose a step as he ages.
Field40 45 Has work to do to stick at 3B. Range, first step, and hands could cause a move to 1B; not a sure lock to move, but already gets reps at 1B and will only be a playable hot corner defender at best.
Throw55 55 Above-avg arm-strength, easy carry across the infield. Helps his chances of remaining at 3B, though won’t come into play as much if he moves across the dirt to 1B.

MiLB Summary-Has shored up aspects of his hit tool and contact skill, now looking like one of baseball’s better prospects with excellent offensive upside. Ceiling of impactful middle-of-the-lineup bat, above-average hit/on-base producer with plus power. Has star potential, especially if he can stick at 3B; dominating A-Ball competition and looks polished enough to come quick; could reach the big leagues by late 2020 at earliest.

Putting in work

Alec Bohm stats from Wichita State.

The Philadelphia Phillies were impressed with Alec Bohm’s stats at Wichita State but more due diligence would be a necessity, holding the number three overall pick. This is the future of a team’s success.

The Phillies unearthed this fact during analysis and examining Alec Bohm’s makeup and character, Wichita State strength and conditioning coach Kerry Rosenboom stated, Bohm was the only player on the team to select a five-day in-season weight-training plan (everyone else lifted three or four days per week).

When the team was on the road, Bohm would take a picture of the hotel gym, send it to Rosenboom and ask, “This is what they’ve got. What [exercises] can you give me?”

2018 Draft

Alec Bohm's stats and hitting in college got him drafted 3rd overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018.

The Philadelphia Phillies drafted Alec Bohm with the third overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. He signed with Philadelphia on June 12, 2018 and received a $5.85 Million signing bonus.

This is what was said about him during the MLB Network coverage of the draft.

Minor Leagues

2018

Alec Bohm stats in the Phillies minor league system started with a stop with the GCL Phillies in the Gulf Coast League.

He recorded six hits and two RBI in 12 at-bats with the Phils rookie ball club in three games.

Next was class A, short season with the Williamsport Crosscutters. He struggled a bit as he adjusted to using wooden bats instead of the aluminum ones used by the NCAA.

Heading into 2019, MLB.com ranked Bohm the 50th best prospect in baseball. Baseball America ranked him 65th. He had only been in the Phillies system for 2-3 months at the time.

2019

Alec Bohm playing for the Reading Phillies in 2019.

“The Bohmer” started 2019 at Lakewood, where he batted .367 with nine doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI.

Alec Bohm’s stats earned him a promotion to play for the Class-A Advanced Clearwater Threshers, where he’d play 40 games, batting .329 with four home runs and 27 RBI’s before receiving another promotion.

This time Bohm was headed to play for the Double-A Reading Phillies. While in Reading, Alec was selected to play in the MLB All-Star Futures Game. The only player in the Phils farm system to be given this honor in 2019.

From Lakewood to Reading, Alec Bohm’s stats read .305 with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs in 475 at bats. He played 83 games at third base and 23 at first base.

At the end of the 2019 season, Bohm was awarded the Paul Owens award as the top position prospect in the Phillies organization.

The Show

Alec Bohm made the Philadelphia Phillies roster in the 2020 strike shortened Covid-19 season.

He’d finish the season as the National League Rookie-of-the-Year runner-up. In 180 plate appearances, Alec Bohm batted .338.

Bohm hit an MLB best .452 with runners in scoring position too.

Slump

"The Bohmer" Alec Bohm getting loose at Citizen's Bank Park

The acting Phillies third baseman in 2021 suffered through a sophomore slump in 2021, only hitting .247 and being sent down to Triple-A, where he’d play for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs for the first time in his career.

He bypassed Lehigh Valley on his way to the Phillies, going directly from the Reading Phillies to the MLB’s Philadelphia pro club.

Playing a third base was something that Bohm wasn’t expected to do as a professional baseball player because it was widely believed he didn’t have the range, reflexes or needed instincts for the hot corner.

HE DOESN’T AND HE NEEDS TO BE MOVED TO FIRST BASE. THIS COULD AFFECT HIS BAT AND CONFIDENCE FROM THE PLATE.

Hey Joe

Alec Bohm apologizes after being caught on camera saying he hates Philly.

I find it shocking that Philadelphia Phillies Manager Joe Girardi doesn’t seem to acknowledge the importance of defense at third base.

He was an MLB catcher and should know better, especially since the Phillies already had one of the absolute worst fielding teams in baseball for 2021.

Adding sluggers Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos has made this defense even worse.

Alec Bohm stats show that he led all MLB third basemen with 15 errors and on April 11, 2022, he had three errors in one game.

2009 Yankees

The 2004 Boston Red Sox (-26) had the worst Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) sabermetric. The 2021 Philadelphia Phillies DRS was almost double that.

The second worst DRS to win a World Series was the Joe Girardi managed 2009 New York Yankees (-22) that defeated the Phillies in the World Series, ending the hopes of Philadelphia fans for the city’s first repeat champions since the Broad Street Bullies won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1973-74 & 1974-75.

A-Rod

Alex Rodriguez raking with the New York Yankees.

When the Yankees acquired Alex Rodriguez, he was a shortstop and won two gold gloves playing there in 2002 & 2003.

With five-time gold glove winner Derek Jeter already the Yankees shortstop, A-Rod was moved to third base.

He led the American League in errors in 2006 with 24. He did better after this but it was a slow maturation.

The Yankees had Jeter’s five GG, Mark Teixeira was also a five-time gold glove winner at first base, and Robinson Cano was a two-time gold glove winner at second base. That rounded out Joe Girardi’s infield.

When Alex Rodriguez was acquired by New York, he was considered the best baseball player on the planet. He was a 14-time all-star and three-time MVP.

He is a player with 3,115 hits, 696 homeruns, a career .295 batting average, 329 steals, 2,086 RBI’s. .295/.380/.550

At shortstop, he already had range but had to get used to how quickly the ball comes up on you at third base.

This is why third base is commonly referred to as the hot corner.

Girardi moving A-Rod to third made sense. Playing Alec Bohm there 13 years later doesn’t.

Phillies 1B

Phillies teammates Alec Bohm and Rhys Hoskins playing around on the diamond at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Rhys Hoskins is the current Phillies first baseman and fans love him in Philly. The problem is that even though he’s a nice player with power, Rhys is a .242 hitter with 25-30 homerun power. Not 35-50 homerun power

He attempted to play left field the way Bohm has attempted his hand at the hot corner. If Hoskins was a .260 hitter with 35-45 homerun power maybe there is more of an argument to be made for Rhys

Alec Bohm’s stats have him tagged as a future batting champion. A player that will be in contention for batting titles for a long time but for this to happen he has to be moved to first base.

Any MLB player that can even play a poor third base can be converted to a first baseman. After a short adjustment period “The Bohmer” will be at least a decent fielding first baseman. Something Rhys Hoskins really isn’t.

Thome-to-Howard

Phillies teammates Jim Thome and Ryan Howard talk baseball on the field

If Jim Thome can be replaced in Philadelphia at first base, so can Rhys Hoskins. There is no comparison of Thome-to-Hoskins that is even slightly not laughable.

Jim Thome was originally a third baseman that was converted to first. He had similar issues as Alec.

From 1994-96, Thome committed 48 errors playing third. The former Phillies first baseman was signed to a massive free-agent deal prior to the 2003 season.

He hit 47 homers in his first season as a Phillies and 42 HR in 2004. He was replaced by Ryan Howard due to injury during the 2005 season.

Howard won Rookie-of-the-Year honors in 2005 and was the 2006 National League MVP. Meanwhile Thome was dealt to the Chicago White Sox in 2006 for center fielder Aaron Rowand.

Jim would hit 42 homeruns for the White Sox in his first full season on the South Side of Chicago. He would hit 35 more in 2007 and 34 homers in 2008, the same season the Phillies became World Fu***** Champs.

The conversion for “The Bohmer”

Te Philadelphia Phillies defensive sabermetrics by position for 2021

Above is the defensive metrics for the 2021 Philadelphia Phillies by position. After some time to transition, Alec Bohm stats would be better overall at first base than Rhys Hoskins’ are now.

Third base likely would improve too without Bohm.

Rhys is a nice player but he’s not a top ten MLB first baseman. He isn’t even considered by MLB Network to be on the just missed list either.

Alec Bohm on the other hand has the opportunity, if he can live up to his potential to become a top 3-5 MLB first baseman. A premiere Major League Baseball first baseman.

Alec Bohm Stats – April 2022

The 2022 Philadelphia Phillies season is only in its infancy but the team is struggling to get on base.

Alec is mostly pinch hitting right now. After hitting .338 as a rookie and leading MLB with hitters in scoring position in 2020 (.452) and battling through an awful slump in 2021, “The Bohmer” is at it again.

Heading into April 19, Bohm has had 20 plate appearances .571/.550/.714. He has 8 hits, 3 BB, 3 SF, 4 RBI’s.

JOE GIRARDI PUT ALEC BOHM AT FIRST BASE, YOUR JOB MAY DEPEND ON IT.

RHYS HOSKINS ISN’T JIM THOME. IN ACTUALITY HOSKINS IS A PLAYER THAT CAN BE UPGRADED AND THE PHILLIES MIGHT HAVE THAT UPGRADE.

GIVE ALEC BOHM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT THE F*** HE’S BEEN DOING HIS ENTIRE LIFE.
