After the 2017 season and draft had ended by late June, the warriors were champions again and Philadelphia drafted Markelle Fultz with the #1 pick in the draft. I knew two things moving forward, if Danny Ainge is willing to trade the #1 pick to an up and coming team within his division, you walk away and don’t do it. I knew this the Sunday afternoon the trade happened. The other thing I knew is the #1 pick in the following year’s draft was going to be a point guard from Europe. Luka Doncic with his skillset, scouts had Luka pegged as the top pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
A month or so before March Madness it was now becoming common thought that the first pick in the 2018 NBA Draft was now going to be Arizona freshman center Deandre Ayton. I hadn’t seen much of him, living just outside of Philadelphia, with him playing on the west coast. Nothing I did see which was early on in the season showed me he deserved this spot at the top without doubt. Most freshman however are alot better later in the year. Kevin Durant didn’t live up to the hype until conference play began in January. Just an example. I figured I’d see the #4 seeded Arizona Wildcats come March.
Let the Madness Begin
As I previously stated Arizona entered the 2018 NCAA tournament a 4 seed. I was eager to see this 7 foot undisputed #1 pick in action. He should win atleast a game or two on his own right? Larry Bird beat DePaul in the 1979 Final Four by himself. Short story long, Arizona loses to a 13 seed in the 1st round. He couldn’t beat Buffalo, who couldn’t beat Kentucky. Kentucky couldn’t beat Kansas State, who then lost to Loyola-Chicago.
One night I was relaxing, watching the NBA playoffs with friends It was a 2nd round game between Boston and Philly to be exact. Watching the game with friends a conversation about the upcoming draft started. I don’t know if a promo for the upcoming Draft had just aired or what. So I really didn’t see Ayton play much and I’d never seen Luka Doncic play. Why was he slipping? I knew nothing about him other than his name and that Luka at his size had a special skillset but it seemed NBA scouts were down on him as the Draft closed in. Why?
Unimpressed by the idea of Ayton. I wanted to find out why this guard from Europe was no longer considered the #1 pick. First thoughts being maybe this 17-18 year old was getting pushed around in a rough and tumble league. A NBA 1990s kind of league. A league not as talented as the NBA by a longshot but its physical and talented. It is better than the NCAA, not on overall potential of players, but the right now of it all. No college team is beating their best teams.
Luka and his Skillset
So I’m expecting to see something negative as I previously stated. Instead I found that Luka led Madrid to the 2018 EuroLeague title. Doncic was also named the youngest EuroLeague MVP as well as Final Four MVP. A NCAA MOP or Finals MVP award. Their are a host of other awards he garnered since becoming a pro at a team youngest 16 years old.
The Video and Scouting
Immediately I went to YouTube to witness his game. It took less than 5 minutes personally for me. My friend asked is he good? I responded he’s Steve Nash at his MVP best with more size, strength, speed, and athleticism. He can rebound and this is what he is now at 18, not based on future potential. I wouldn’t expect all scouts to be as fast to diagnose talent. With time however they should have seen it.
The scouts on Luka and NBA Draft. Regret?
From there I told anyone who would listen if Luka with his skillset isn’t the 1st pick in the NBA Draft scouts and G.M’s would be fired. This is so simple. I know the 7 footer thing. Doesn’t apply every single time!
Phoenix is on the Clock
Deandre Ayton. This morning I still hadn’t really seen Ayton play. West coast thing, awful team last year. I just don’t have the time. I knew it was the wrong pick. The team overall should be good soon not on Deandre alone though. So back to this morning, I evaluated Mr. Ayton. Ten minutes I looked for a comparison. I saw some things from other players, then i got it. Brad Daugherty. DeAndre Ayton has a Brad Daugherty game. He’s athletic, but not 7 footer jumping over backboards athletic. He could be a Hall of Famer someday. Possibly. Who gets paid for these decisions? Why? How could they not see Ayton isn’t a Shaq or Kareem. An Olajuwon or a Wilt. He doesn’t have the physical talent of a Dwight Howard type. WTF NBA scouts.
Sactown is now on the clock
Sacramento Kings management I am a realist and realize no one who works for you will read this. If in the off chance luck is on your side and someone did read it. I am available to be a scout and if you read my stuff you’ll see I have a grasp on the salary cap and also am available to be your G.M. I feel really bad for what happened to you. Marvin Bagley. WTF. I’ve seen him dunk over two defenders in the post. None of those duos will ever be playing on the blocks in the NBA. I’m a Carolina fan, so I’m well versed in Bagley. WTF. If you want someone who has absolutely no professional experience at this get in touch before they move your team back to Omaha. My resume reads inexperienced but not retar…oops challenged in the brain like your current scouts.
ATL is now on the clock
The hawks. What luck. OMG, a generational player fell to #3 due to incompetence of other franchises. Congratulations Atlanta. This is a Wonka Golden Ticket. Wow! Wait WTF… trade. WOW!
Dallas steals Luka
It is nice to see someone was smart enough in the NBA to make a simple evaluation on a special talent. Luka’s skillset must have shown Mavericks scouts what I saw Pre NBA Draft.
If Lebron James never existed Luka would be doing things that no one his age had ever done before. Given that Lebron does exist there are still some things he’s doing that James couldn’t even accomplish. His shooting is well advanced at his age compared to Lebron. In fact an argument can be made that Doncic is a better shooter now than Lebron ever was. Whatever you think, it’s close. Luka and his skillset despite the scouts are setting the NBA ablaze right now.
35 pts. Triple double in 25 Minutes
Last night Doncic had a 35 point triple double in 25 minutes. This coming off one MVP caliber performance after another. Topping the latest when it doesn’t even seem possible. It is totally viable that Luka could become the youngest NBA MVP in league history. I never thought about let alone predicted anything like this. I did see more than enough that nobody else should even have been considered for the 2018 #1 pick.
Ayton isn’t even half a Luka.
Some guys are known for their initials or a nickname like Skywalker or The Iceman. No matter what it is everyone knows who is being talked about and the other thing each player had or has a game that exudes greatness. Some just go by their first name like Mike. Wilt. Kobe. Oscar. Lebron. Shaq. Magic. Kareem. Dirk. Vince. Allen. Giannis. Moses. Julius. Kawhi. Luka.
